Hi there im sure this has been addressed befor but cant find much on it. What is the ideal way to have my top hame straps should they be straight across on the top or lower and follow the curve of the collar somewhat?

The proper way is to fit with the top strap at the hame setting that puts it as close to level/straight across the horse’s neck. An inverted U puts too much pressure on the neck and can cause the hames to sit too high in the collar, while too high of a setting can cause the hames to sit too low in the collar. Another tip I once received and have since found useful for fitting was to start your upper and lower straps on the same setting to get the proper height adjustment, then adjust each strap in or out accordingly to make the hames sit properly in the seam against the collar. Some horses necks are thick enough that you may even to have to bend the hame slightly for the best fit—-though I understand this is very rare and have never personally done it.
