Are heavy clay soils more suitable for Irish potatoes than silts or sandy loams?

Any root plants, i.e. plants that store their energy in large roots or in tubers, will thrive in lighter soils better than in heavier ones, because it is easier to push their root system downwards. Compacted soils also hinder root growth.
