That depends upon the size your trees will grow to. If they are on dwarf stock, they can be planted much closer together. Why don't you ask the nursery where you bought the trees? They would know.

We planted closer, about 10 feet, and then planned to tree spade them farther apart after a few years growth.

Best time to plant a tree is last year, next best time is tomorrow!

As Nora said, it depends on the tree and rootstock. Dwarf rootstock can be planted roughly 6 feet apart. Semi-dwarf is typically recommended to be 12-15 feet apart. Standard stock is generally 20-30 feet apart. The taller the tree, the more spacing you might want, to ensure plenty of sun and air flow between trees, in order to prevent fungus issues. I planted my semi-dwarf stock 15 feet apart, but now wish I'd gone about 12. They are at the desired height I want them, and roughly 2/3 of the width, and I could almost fit another tree between each (with space to spare). The way I prune, I wish I'd gone for 12 feet instead, so I could have planted a few more. Oh well, live and learn. Next time I'll be doing standard root stock anyway.

I've got the smaller trees, dwarf-type. I've got mine planted about 10' to 12' apart.
