Thank you Klaus for the info. I think sudan grass may be different than Johnson grass. Horses can get cystitis syndrome, colic like symptoms with bloody urine. There is no treatment and recovery is poor to none. They die. If the grass is stressed (frost, rain after a drought) it is also harmful to cattle. Prussic acid develops in bloodstream and fails to carry oxygen. Causes respiratory failure and death.
