Your horses won't care what the width of the forecart is. As far as they are concerned, what matters is the width of the doubletree and yoke. Unless you're working a single of course.

If you follow two wheel trails going where you're going, go regular vehicle tire width will be a smother ride. I use truck front Axles for the forecarts then they follow the trails tires are bigger turn easier 10-20 lbs tire pressure. Hitch to pull other implements is fastened to the axle. we pull some tractor implements.

40 inch is standard because corn rows used to be on 40 inch centers so horses could travel in between rows. Most tracks now days are closer to 60 inch centers. So it depends what you want to do with it. Mine is also on 40_42 nch center works well and feels stable.
