What is the common cause of eggs with soft or thin shells, with hens during the winter months, if oyster shell or other sources of calcium is available?

Lack of protein would be my guess

A deficiency of vitamin D. This problem is commonly corrected by adding cod liver oil or other vitamin D supplements to the ration.
