FERTILIZER SPREADERS

THE EVENER SHOP -6840 Twp. Rd. 568, Holmesville OH 44633– (330) 674-7247.

Fertilizer Spreader: A funnel-type rotary spreader built on a two-wheeled trailer with a belt drive from the axle to operate the spinner. The funnel holds 9 bushels of seed or 990 pounds of fertilizer, and spreading width is from 20 to 60 feet, depending upon speed. Joe Foster’s team of Suffolks on a Miller’s forecart pulled the spreader.

Fertilizer Spreader: A Vicon Pendulum spreader on a McCormick-Deering  mower gear. The pendulum assures an extremely accurate spreading rate across the entire spreading pattern, and it will accurately spread lime, fertilizer or seeds. On Saturday, the spreader was pulled by a skittish team of Belgians.
E-Z Trail makes a similar Vicon rotary fan-type spreader powered by a much modified McCormick-Deering No. 7 mower gear. I missed the field demonstration of this machine.

Fertilizer Spreader: Two spotted horses on a Pioneer basic forecart pulled the ½-ton spreader with a mounted gas engine to drive the bottom conveyor and the spreading spinner.

Plastic Mulch Lifter: An attachment for an I&J 2-row cultivator that runs under the edges of plastic mulch, loosening and lifting it so it can be easily picked up. Demoed behind a team of Percherons.

PTO Carts: Farm Boy makes a line of four-wheeled PTO carts with foot pedal operated power steering on the rear wheels, brakes, hydraulic outlets and 540 RPM PTO. Available in 20 to 170HP sizes, a 170 HP model was used with a Farm Boy three-point tiller chassis and a 103-inch Maschio tiller.

PTO Cart: Gateway furnished a PTO cart with a Kohler 40HP engine, as well as a 50HP four-wheel diesel model.

Ground Drive PTO Carts: The heavy-duty model was used to power a John Deere 336 square baler.
The general duty model was demonstrated powering a Conestoga 80 bushel PTO manure spreader, as well as a Farm King two spinner hay tedder. A general duty PTO cart with 12 volt hydraulics was used on a Farm King two-rotor hay tedder.

Forecart: Mullet’s makes a line of basic forecarts, which were used on several Betterway implements.

Forecarts:  (Basic) Pioneer makes a full line of light and heavy duty basic forecarts and a number of them were in use throughout the field demos. 12-volt hydraulic attachment for a basic forecart. Was used on the 3-row planter from Reidhar Enterprises. (PTO) All Pioneer PTO forecarts are equipped with hydraulic brakes, steering, hitch stabilizer and remote outlets. The 27, 35, and 45 and 75HP two-wheel PTO carts were used to power various PTO machines throughout both days.    A heavy duty 116HP, Deutz diesel powered, four-wheel PTO cart that was demoed powering an 8-foot Maschio rotary tiller.

PTO Fore Carts – Sunset makes several models of PTO carts with air bag suspension.
A 25 HP with 3-point was used to power a 5-foot King Kutter tiller and to provide hydraulics for the Pequea sweetcorn planter.
Another 25HP with Subaru engine and 3-point was used on the potato digger and an IVA hydraulic boom sprayer.
60HP with Lombard diesel engine was used to power the New Holland 7540 round baler.

Forecarts: Basic -- WH makes a line of basic forecarts that includes heavy duty and Haflinger sized versions. Several White Horse basic carts were used during the field demonstrations.
Model 631 Hydraulic: A ground driven hydraulic pump, a pressure accumulator system, and the necessary hand valves provide hydraulic power to four quick connect couplers to operate cylinders on towed implements.

Round Baler: A New Idea 4845 baler that was powered in the field by a 115 HP, four-wheeled PTO cart made by Knepp’s Power Units of Montgomery, Ind., and four Percherons.

Bale Basket: The gravity-unloading bale basket holds about 100 bales and is towed behind a small square baler, which pushes the bales into the basket by the force of the plunger. Demoed behind a John Deere 327 baler, a Pioneer 35HP PTO cart and four Percheron horses.

Baler: A New Holland BR740 round baler was demoed behind a Gateway 50HP Deutz diesel four-wheel PTO cart and four Belgian horses.
A New Holland BC5060 square baler was powered by a Gateway 40HP PTO cart behind four Belgians. The bales were loaded onto a trailed flatbed wagon from E-Z Trail, Inc.
Haybine: A 1465 New Holland Haybine was in action in the hay field behind a PTO cart from Sunset Creations and four draft horse-pony crosses.
Hay Rake: A Farm King Batrake eight-wheel hay rake was demonstrated behind a White Horse 12-volt hydraulic forecart pulled by Ed Martin’s Percherons.
A Pequea rotary rake was in the field powered by an I&J regular duty PTO cart with 12-volt hydraulics and pulled by a team of Belgian mules.
Hay Tedders: A Farm King two-rotor tedder was demonstrated behind an I&J regular duty ground drive PTO cart with 12-volt hydraulics and a team of Fjords.
A Farm King 17-foot, four-rotor tedder was powered by a Gateway 30HP PTO cart pulled by two Belgian horses.
A Pequea 710 ground drive Fluffer Tedder operated on Friday behind a Mullet’s basic forecart and a team of Spots. On Saturday, the oxen, Herschel and Walker, from Tillers International on a Pioneer forecart did the honors.
Combination Rake & Tedder: The Kingman 6-Way DR520 is a versatile, two-rotor machine with its own engine, added by Hilltop Machine, that can be converted to ted and rake hay in several different ways.

Mowers: I&J’s new ground drive 7-foot mower with double knives that reciprocate against each other was unpluggable even when cutting through newly mown hay or a raked windrow. It was demoed by Bob Erickson and his mammoth donkeys.
Trailer mower: A 7-foot cut PTO mower with the same cutter bar described above, was driven by I&J's general duty, ground drive PTO cart, pulled by a couple of Percheron horses.

Round Bale Wrapper: The Model 250 inline wrapper is hydraulically driven with a 13HP Honda engine and will wrap either large square bales up to 5½ feet, or round bales was demonstrated on Saturday.

Hydraulic Bale Shredder: New this year is a hydraulically powered platform with two opposing metal sides. The floor is equipped with a chain conveyor and there is a double knife cutter bar, mounted on two swinging arms that come down over the one open end. The conveyor moves the bales into the cutter bar which slices off pieces fine enough for TMR mixing.

Balers: John Deere 336 square baler. Demonstrated being powered by an I&J heavy-duty ground drive PTO cart with 24-volt hydraulics and four of David C. Yoder’s Belgian horses.
A John Deere 327 square baler was pulled by a Pioneer 35 HP PTO cart and four Percherons.
A local New Holland 648 round baler was powered by a Pioneer 75HP PTO cart and three Belgian horses.
A Gehl 6635SXT skid loader with a bale spear was used to load round bales into the bale wrappers and the Sunset Bale shredder.

Grass and Seed Drills: The Esch Model 5507 ground drive no-till drill plants 15 rows with row spacing of 5.5 inches. A 5.5HP Honda engine powered the hydraulics on the demonstration machine that was pulled by four Belgian horses on a Pioneer forecart.
The Esch Model 5503 is similar to its larger brother except it plants seven rows, has a hand-operated hydraulic pump, and was pulled by Ed Martin’s team of Percherons on an E-Z Trail basic forecart.

Cultivator –A Hogback five-tine, one horse, walk behind cultivator that was put to work behind a Belgian mule.
Planter: A two-row planter using John Deere 7000 plateless planting units with a seat, platform and safety guard at the front, a spring assisted hand lift, row markers and an optional fertilizer attachment was demonstrated behind Jim Greenman’s team of Belgian horses.
Transplanter: A team of Percherons on an E-Z Trail cart pulled the Hogback 100 gallon water wheel transplanter, which makes a row of holes in the plastic mulch and the ground and puts water in each hole. Workers riding on low seats at the rear insert a plant seedling into each hole.

Cultivators: One-row Walking: A five-shovel walk behind garden cultivator working behind a Belgian mule and between the rows of plastic mulch.
One-row Riding: A small, five-shovel riding garden cultivator for one horse. The machine was demonstrated behind a Belgian mule.
Wide: A team of dappled Percherons pulled this two-row cultivator that is modified to cultivate both sides of a 4-foot plastic mulch row.
Two-row: Worked in waist-high corn behind three Belgian horses.

Transplanters: A combination three-point or pull transplanter with a 150-gallon water tank and equipped with Nolt’s new super water wheel was demonstrated behind a team of Belgian mules on a basic forecart from Miller’s Repair. The snap-on spikes offer plant spacing of from 6 to 98 inches. Nolt's showed an 85-gallon pull-type only transplanter, also with the variable super water wheel. It was demoed by a team of dapple Percherons on an E-Z Trail forecart.

Lawn Mower: New this year is a three-gang, steerable reel-type lawn mower with platform, seat and safety rail, as well as shafts for the Haflinger that pulled it in the demos.

Cover Crop Broadcaster: An air seeder to “fly” cereal rye into standing corn. Demonstrated being pulled by a single unhappy Haflinger.

3 Point: An I&J three-point, one-bottom, 12-inch Radex plow was demonstrated mounted on the I&J three-point trailed dolly behind an I&J basic forecart and Jim Greenman’s team of Belgians.

Plows: Walking: A 12-inch, right-hand plow was used in the men on a rope demonstration, as well as being demoed behind a team of Belgian mules.
Sulky: Hand Lift: A 12-inch right-hand frameless sulky with a Kverneland bottom was pulled by a three Percheron horses.
Foot Lift: A 14-inch right hand sulky plow with a foot operated, spring assisted lift and Oliver bottom was behind four Percheron horses, hitched two and two.
A second footlift sulky with a Kverneland bottom was pulled by four Belgians, also hitched two and two.
Gang: A team of six Percherons headed up a Pioneer 14-inch gang plow with Kverneland bottoms.       
A Pioneer 16-inch gang plow with Oliver bottoms was demonstrated behind six Belgians.

 Plow: Okello walking plow made in Uganda by Bob Okello and brought to this country by him. Now owned by Tillers, the plow was demonstrated by Tillers’ oxen Herschel and Walker.

Plows: 712 Sulky: A 14-inch, right-hand sulky plow with an Oliver bottom was demonstrated being pulled by four Belgian horses, hitched two and two. The 715 sulky plow is a frameless sulky with a leaf spring to allow the bottom to kick back in case of hitting a hidden obstruction. The new plow, with a 14-inch bottom, was demonstrated being pulled by three Belgian horses.

Model 510 two-bottom plow: Designed to be used with the WH Uni-Frame, the plow is three-point hitch and has the White Horse hydraulic reset feature. The 14-inch, two-bottom plow with Oliver bottoms was pulled by eight Percherons on a White Horse hydraulic forecart.

Mulch Layer: The Hogback raised bed machine that first dispenses fertilizer, then lays a drip irrigation line, and finally puts down a continuous strip of 4-foot wide plastic mulch, covering the edges with dirt to keep it in place. Pulled by a team of dapple gray Percherons on an E-Z Trail forecart.
Sprayer: A Model 5005 "Xtenda Boom" produce sprayer with a 100 gallon tank, a 6.5HP Honda powered pump and a hand winch to raise and lower the 24-foot side boom was pulled by a team of dapple gray Percheron horses.            
Another Model 5005 sprayer was set up with the boom across the rear and extending to each side. Operated in the field demonstrations by a team of Fjords.

Potato Plows – A three-point potato plow that digs under a potato row, lifts the tubers and leaves them on top of the ground. The machine was demonstrated on I&J's forecart with a three-point adapter, behind a team of Belgian mules.

Sprayers: IVA had a 200-gallon boomless field sprayer that covers 45 feet. Designed for the organic farmer, it will handle difficult to spray materials. Demoed behind a team of Percherons on an E-Z Trail forecart.
A 200-gallon sprayer with an engine driven pump and a manually controlled 45-foot boom with foam markers was pulled by two Belgian Mules on a Pioneer forecart.
A 15-gallon wheelbarrow style sprayer that can be pushed through greenhouses or small plots by hand. The pump is battery powered, the booms are each 4 feet long and can be used in either the horizontal or vertical position.
A 15-gallon hand-pulled produce sprayer designed with a higher clearance, two under-mounted nozzles, and side shields to confine the spray to the row being straddled.
A 200-gallon sprayer with a 25-foot hydraulic-fold side boom was demonstrated in the produce field behind a Miller’s forecart and a team of mules.
An IVA 55-gallon, high clearance sprayer with a 15-foot manual side boom and pulled by a Belgian mule came next.

Weeders: Called the “Power Hoe, this three-row machine has three pairs of rotary tines, each set of tines driven by a hydraulic motor and mounted on a swinging arm. Three seats are provided for the operators who manipulate the tines for close cultivation of truck crops. Pulled by a team of Belgian mules.
24-foot Tine Weeder: Miller Bros. used Kovar spring tine weeder harrow units to build this machine. Demoed behind four Percheron horses

Planter: A 2-row planter that uses John Deere Maxi-Merge planting units and has disc markers and a hand lift. The planter was demonstrated behind a team of Belgians.

Sprayer: A Betterway 300-gallon field sprayer with a 36-foot boom and a Honda engine to power the pump was pulled by a team of Percherons on a Mullet basic forecart.
200-gallon Betterway field sprayer with an engine powered pump and 34-foot booms with foam markers was demoed behind two Belgian horses.

NOLT'S PRODUCE SUPPLIES – 152 North Hershey Avenue, Leola PA 17540– (717) 656-9764.

Mulch Layers: (Flatbed) Convertible between pull type or three-point, this layer will handle either 3- or 4-foot-wide plastic mulch, as well as a drip irrigation tube. Angled discs at the rear cover the edges of the mulch with dirt to hold it in place. A team of Belgian mules on a Miller’s forecart pulled it. (Raised Bed) Similar to the previous machine except that it has discs in front that create a 3- to 5-inch high, 32-inch-wide raised bed, upon which the drip line is laid and over which the plastic is stretched. The machine was demonstrated behind a team of Belgian mules on an E-Z Trail forecart.

Mulch Pickup Reel: A three-point machine with a hydraulically driven reel, that's designed for rolling up used plastic mulch after it’s no longer needed. It was demonstrated on a three-point PTO cart from Sunset Creations behind a team of Percheron horses.

Tiller: Farm Boy furnished a 103-inch Maschio tiller that was used with the Farm Boy tiller chassis and 170HP PTO cart, behind four Belgian horses.
Tiller Chassis: This machine is used with a tiller and a PTO forecart to provide hydraulic lift capabilities, as well as hydraulic tines that raise and lower with the tiller and keep the tiller from pushing the rig forward into the horses.

Cultimulcher: The Reliable Model 2010-10 cultimulcher is a 10-foot wide machine with three rows of spring tines followed by a row of open basket rollers. The machine had the optional front steering wheels with a seat and platform and trailing rear wheels. The machine was pulled by six Percheron horses owned by Michael Yoder.

Harrows – New this year is a harrow cart that can be used with either spike or spring tooth harrow, allowing the driver to ride instead of trudging along behind.
Spike Tooth – A single 5 foot section was pulled by a mule in the produce field.
Spring Tooth – A 8-foot, 2-section spring tooth harrow equipped with the optional Pioneer Crumbler Roller feature and a harrow cart was pulled by four Belgian horses.
In the produce field, a single section with the crumbler was pulled by a Lineback Shorthorn Ox.
Homesteader: The Pioneer Homesteader is a two-wheeled machine, resembling the old one-row, two-horse cultivators, that’s versatile in that a line of quick change tools, including a 10-inch plow, a potato plow, a spring tooth harrow, a one-row seeder and a one-row cultivator can be quickly attached. The Homesteader with plow was demonstrated behind a team of Percherons in both the produce field the main field demos, and with a disc attachment behind Percherons

Cultimulchers: These machines feature an open basket roller in front, four rows of spring tines and another roller in the rear, and a platform, seat and safety bar for the operator on top. 
A 3-foot wide model pulled by a Belgian mule, was demonstrated in the produce field.
A 5-foot, single section model was pulled by a team of Belgian horses.
A new 8-foot, two section version, with a tongue to prevent rolling into the team, performed behind four Belgian horses.
A 10-foot model was pulled by eight pony-draft horse crosses.

Sub-Soilers –The Model 520 is a three-point, two shank model with the hydraulic reset feature. It was mounted on the Model 500 Uni-Frame and pulled by a White Horse Model 631 hydraulic forecart pulled by six Belgian horses.

Mower –E-Z Trail showed a one-horse mower that they call an "Alley Mower." The machine is designed to mow the "alleys" between rows of plants in vineyards, berry patches and the like. It has either a 30'' or 48" front mounted cutter bar that can be moved to a side mounted position. The machine was demonstrated in the produce field behind a Belgian mule.

Misc.: Three-point adapter: A hand lift three-point hitch that bolts onto a basic forecart and permits the use of small three-point implements. The adapter was used on an I&J forecart to demonstrate the I&J potato plow during the produce demonstrations.
Three-Point Hitch Tool Carrier: The I&J three-point trailed dolly or tool carrier is a two wheeled trailer that allows the use various light three-point implements.  The dolly was used behind an I&J forecart with optional 12-volt hydraulics to demonstrate the I&J one bottom plow.

Stalk Chopper Attachment for New Idea corn pickers: A flail knife stalk chopper that mounts beneath the New Idea picker and is belt driven from the picker’s gearbox. One or two-row versions available. Not demonstrated.

Misc.: Back Blade: A 6-foot back blade mounted on a Pioneer forecart was pulled by a team of dappled gray Percheron horses.
Dump Cart: A two-wheeled dump cart with a wooden box was pulled by a team of Fjord horses on a Pioneer basic cart.
Work Sled: The Pioneer sled was used behind the Tillers’ oxen to demonstrate scattering manure by hand.
Another sled with sides and a seat was demonstrated behind Don Burn’s team of Belgian horses.
Wagons: Several Pioneer wagons were used to move people between the parking lot and the show grounds.

Three Point Trailer Cart: When hitched behind a PTO forecart w/hydraulic capabilities, this tool permits the use of any category one, three-point implement, including those that are PTO driven. The cart was used with a Mohawk 6-foot tiller and a Gateway four-wheel PTO cart and four Belgian horses.
