John Davis has always put up his hay loose using conventional tools. I spent an afternoon watching him do some of it. Here is a clip:

Thanks for posting this. Great to watch. Back in Bavaria I also only put up loose hay, but pitchforked it onto the wagon and into the hay mow. It was quite a relief when I got a hay blower, a piece of equipment that had an electric motor and with a big fan sucked the hay into pipes and blew it into the hay loft at exactly the place where one wanted to have it.
It could not have been that hot on the day you filmed John Davis, judging by the horses not sweating and him dressed the way he is.
We got our hay in in wire-tied square bales this year on June 30 and it was 96 degrees. By the way, ten minutes after the last bale was in, thunderstorms blew into our area and we got about an inch of rain.
