I have come to realize that the drag bar is bent on my No.4 JD mower. I have been using it this way for a few years but would like to straiten it. Currently I have the lead and timing set correctly but this puts the pitman arm out of alignment with the flywheel. My thoughts are to heat the bar while it is on the mower and iteratively pull it back into its proper shape, adjusting the lead until the pitman are is running parallel to the flywheel and the lead is correct, I would then go back and adjust the timing. I do not have a good bar to compare It to or a press to bend it in so the torch is pretty much my only option. Has anyone else had experience re-bending one of these? I don’t really see another way of tackling this but I am open to suggestions or advice.

I bought a Number 9 with a bent drag bar once. I took it to one of my Amish neighbors who has a shop where he works on mowers. He had the proper jig to measure alignment and a press. He straightened the bar for me and only charged me five dollars for doing it. Personally, I'd be inclined to check for someone with a press if it were to happen again rather than heating it. I would be afraid I would change the temper of the metal, but someone with more experience might have a different opinion.

I have bent one back according to one that I though was right. with a press it works every thing lines up right. that is why you need more than one mower, or any old equipment. I think I have 8 mowers and I need more just for parts. the last mower parts that I bought was an aluminum Pittman sticks . 1 for IHC deering #7, #9 and the JD big#4 they cost $100. @. KOCH out of Columbus NE makes them any stick he has made he has the measurements for real nice people to work with.
