I watch a couple of videos on YouTube that was filmed in Europe and in both the horses had bells around the neck. What is the purpose of this tradition. These films came from different regions one was from Romania and the other was from Austria so it's just not a local thing. The one I liked the best was Waldarbeiten Anno dazumal it's not in English but just to watch the horses work and other little thing they do when logging was interesting.

The purpose of bells in the mountains, was to let other people know where one is. Imagine coming down on a steep path in deep snow and suddenly being confronted with oncoming traffic. Especially in thick fog that was a must.

Personally, I always felt bells on my team made it seem much warmer when feeding with them in the cold of winter.. I like them!

Thank you never thought about that coming from open country of Wyoming, where on a clear day you see a mountain peaks fifty to sixty miles away.

I too like bells on my harness. I never get tired of hearing the ring. I will say, that when the snow is crisp and the moonlight shines, there is magic in the bells. I am transported back through the years to my grandparent's farm. My memories are sweet like Christmas cookies and maple sugar candy. Yes, I like bells on my harness!
