Yes, KC, it's that time of the year again. I started cutting firewood again, you probably remember the piles of logs I had when you were here and also the downed locust trees. The latter ones are all cut up and split, now I am working at the older piles. I have no cedar around here, wish I had, I like the smell.
Let's just all be careful with those chainsaws!

K you should have plenty to do getting all that cut up ready to heat you place. Always something to do to keep busy. In the past 2 weeks at sunup I have saw 3 nice mule deer bucks 50 ft from the house Deer season starts Nov12. RD the cedars here have a rapid taper to them they just make firewood a few make corner post 10 ft long 8" tops 24" at the butt just depends on how big A hold you want to dig. I have spent a bunch of days the last 2 weeks gathering up cows and calves to give shots and load out calves. Now we are gathering cows to load out. Then our summer work will be done. I have been helping 2 of my neighbors and doing my summer cattle to. 2 of my neighbors and I trade help we corralled one bunch today they will load tomorrow still have to sort those calves off first so I'm doing what I enjoy doing. Riding horses and working cattle. Hope everyone is getting along good and the count is coming out right.

K. C. It sounds like you are doing well getting ready for winter. I commend you. I too have a little more wood to work up and will start picking corn with my team and wagon tomorrow. The snow will be here soon. I hope I am ready! Good luck to you and the rest of you "Porchers" too.

Ralph,here in Missouri it is unusually mild, and according to the weather forecast will stay so till the end of the month, not even thinking of snow. But I am cutting firewood and chopping kindling wood ever so often. Today I took our Haflinger for a little ride through the countryside, I was dressed like in summer! We are still having some tomatoes, peppers and lettuce, and if I am a little lucky will have another harvest of new potatoes by the end of the month- all from voluntary plants, but neatly in rows where we had the spring and summer potatoes. On the other hand, my fall spinach is coming up only hesitantly, the soil is just too warm for it.
But next week I will start spreading manure/compost with the big guys and hopefully get plowing started.

Klaus, you are a busy guy. I think you are wise to work on wood a little at a time. Cold weather will come, being ready just gives you the chance to thumb your nose at it.
I hope to finish picking my corn by the weekend. If I do, like you I'd like to plow some. Of course I need to empty my compost stack first. Seems there is always plenty to do for a guy not shy about work.
Good news about the potatoes and your nice weather. I bet that day in the buggy ride was good for the soul!
