I'm taking the Red Wattles to the slaughter house today. So far I'm very pleased with this breed of hog and I've seen some apparent differences from the Blue butts I usually keep. The Red Wattles did seem to grow faster and are a lot gentler and easier handled. I'm anxious to find out if there is any difference in the meat. We should know by next week.

I had never heard of this breed of hogs, but found out thru google and wikipedia that this breed is considered endangered.

Yes, the Red Wattle hog is considered one of the heritage breeds and is somewhat endangered or threatened. I have a neighbor who raised them back in the early days of the breed registry and he spoke very highly of them. He eventually convinced me to get some and as soon as I found a litter for sale, I called him to ride along to look at them. I had really only expected to by a gilt or two, but came home with 11. So far, I've been very pleased with them and am planning to give it a go at farrowing some.
