How much does the top seven inches of dry soil on an acre weigh?
That would depend on the density and soil type?

About two million pounds.
I was thinking the same as Jfox, that the soil type and density would make a difference but I suppose the thinking is, that this is covered by word "about". I am assuming the thinking is that the difference in so large an amount as two million would be fairly insignificant. I also kinda got to thinking about the farm I grew up on. We had some fields that I believe if all the rock was screened out, the remaining top soil could be hauled away in a small pickup truck. My grandpa used to tell that a squirrel had to pack his lunch before crossing our place it was so poor.

I'm thinking about 1.6 million pound or 800 tons
A ton of dirt is close to a yard so one acre = 44000 sq feet and figure 7 inches is 7/12ths of a foot equals about 22,000 cu ft or at 27 cu ft per cubic yard that comes to about 800 yards.
Not exact figures but close I bet
