Does Sudan grass cause poisoning in dairy cattle? If so, is Sudan grass poisoning common?

I don't think so, but if not processd correctly, it can. Most of the sudan/ hay grazer, sorghum type forage etc., raised in eastern CO is fed to cattle. Literally millions and millions of tons of it. The areas I am familiar with cut later and since it takes so long to dry, they may be still baling it in late December

Equines seem to be more sensitive to it. Here is good write up of it.

Prussic acid poisoning after a frost is the biggest risk. Sudan and sorghum-sudan mixes are likely to kill livestock after a frost.

Even pasturing cattle on alfalfa after a frost will get to them. If pasturing cut alfalfa fields ,it is best to let them set for a few months until rain and snow cleans them up
