One of my donkeys has come down with what we suspect is EPM. EPM is equine protozoal myeloencephalitis, a protozoal infection. He is unsteady on his hind legs and ambles around like a drunken sailor. The symptoms are definitely neurological. We are treating him with ReBalance and vitamin E. EPM is transmitted through grass or hay that is contaminated with 'possum fecal matter. Has anyone had experience with this? What was the outcome? Also, I was instructed by the vet to also give him 5,000 international units of vitamin E daily. No one seems to be able to tell me how that measures out in any volume measurable way such as tablespoons. I have been giving him 2 of the plastic measuring scoops that comes with MSM, somewhat like a coffee measure. But I'm not sure if that is correct. Any help on that?

Willie was up on his feet today. He may have Wobbles and not EPM. Pretty much the same symptoms (with minor differences) but different cause. One cause of Wobbles may be arthritis. And Willie is 20 years old and, very probably, does have arthritis. I have discontinued giving him the ReBalance which was affecting him negatively but am continuing with the vitamin E.

I do not know too much about either one of the afflictions, but I hope, Nora, that you can enjoy your donkey for many more years to come.

Thank you Klaus. But, sadly, Willie the donk will be put down tomorrow morning. He has been down and there is no hope for him regaining use of his legs.

BTW, Klaus, I wish to commend you on your lucid responses to the "Socialism" thread. I have been waiting for someone to wade into that one and you handled it superbly!

I am sorry , Nora, to hear that Will is beyond help, but thank you very much for your nice words about my comments in the other thread.
