Are flies and hot weather the most important causes of the summer decline in milk production?
No.
While it doesn't say (at least not yet) what is the cause of summer decline in milk, I'd guess it would be a decline if feed quality. I know that we now know what is called "Summer Slump" in our area is caused by grazing mature fescue heads which contain toxins, leading to sore feet, lowered milk production, hard birthing, and a host of other problems in all animals.

I would agree. About mid July our pastures would start to give out.
