How much potash (K2O) do ordinary wood ashes usually contain?
Five to ten percent.
I have read that it's actually the calcium carbonate, or lime, that is most beneficial in wood ashes. Most hardwood ashes are around 50-55 percent lime. I always spread mine on my garden ground but not where I plan to grow potatoes. When I was a boy we saved the hickory ashes to make lye for soap.
