What is the most common cause of a poor lawn?

Just a wild guess but lack of nitrogen

Enjoy the questions Jerry, I rarely know an answer but I learn from each one.

Around here the reason for a poor lawn is that there were to many horses or mules in the yard eating the green grass. I put my team or my riding horse In the yard in the summer as we don't mow the yard.

Ha! I thought "like" pertained to the horses on the lawn. They like that "greener on the other side" thing?
