Should a cow be placed in a box stall or separate quarters at calving time?
I wouldn't say a box stall, but a bigger enclosure of sorts for any 1st time calving.
If the cow hasn't had problems in the past, out in the open seems to be the best.
If calving is early in the year and there is snow on the ground or even cold rain, a calving shed sure helps.
Here in Colorado I am seeing calves out in the field already. Some ranchers just unroll bales of straw out in the pasture for the cows to lay on.
Beef cows offer no problem because you usually don't want to catch up the calf, but an old mama milk cow out on pasture with a new calf that you want to get in a pen, can sure be protective.
