Lye it was often used in making soap. Grandpa always said the soap was strong enough to peel paint and hide. You were certainly clean in the end.

Lime and potash.
I always save our wood ashed for the garden, thinking I was putting on plenty of potash. I was surprised to find out that wood ashes are actually over 50% calcium carbonate, or lime, and less than 5% potash.
