I bought an elevating scraper that will haul 12 YDS of dirt, I will pull it with a 4430 JD as that is what I have. We are going to move A lot of dirt in the next year. I wondered how many horses an mules it would take to just move it empty weight is 19000 + .

Well, K.C. , that of course depends on how long the exercise would last, on the kind of ground and how level it is. But generally one can say, that a work horse in good condition can exert a pull of 10% of its own weight over an extended period of time (over a short term and short distance horses can pull more). So, let's assume we have horses that weigh in at (to make the math easy) 1900 lbs each and each of them has to exert a 190 lb pull and your scraper weighs 19 000 lbs. Now we divide 19000 by 190 and get the number of horses, in this case 100. We all know , of course, that rolling loads or gliding loads( e.g. on ice) require a lot fewer horses!

How many horses and men with Fresno scrapers would it take to do the same amount of work in a day.
My guess
120-160 horses
30-40 drivers
Would be something to see

Scott, it wouldn't only be something to see, it would also mean employment for a lot of people. A good illustration that in highly mechanized societies we need to produce a lot more than we actually need just to keep people at work!
