We had a feature article in the Feb/Mar issue of the magazine by the Nordells detailing how to build an effective deer fence.

Stay-tuff makes some tall woven wire. Looks really nice. Few around here using it on higher pressure areas with cattle and happy with it.

We have a livestock guardian dog who is regularly assigned garden duty during the growing season. She does an amazing job. Other than a few vole thieves of our underground crops, we’ve never lost fruit to raiding deer or raccoon, or in our case, the even more troublesome, melon -loving woodchuck!

My cow dogs run the deer out of the garden if you leave them outside

Just curious..... what kind of dog? How did you train him/her?

We use livestock guardian dogs. There are several breeds, but we use a cross that is primarily Pyrenees since we also use them for guarding our livestock and poultry. Although I would only recommend an LGD breed for livestock protection, I suppose about any breed would work for the garden. Dogs have a natural, territorial instinct. Assuming you haven't trained your dog to accept anything and everything, it will naturally want to chase off unwelcome intruders (aka deer). You should not need to train that behavior. What you might have to train is proper garden etiquette. I don't want my dogs digging up my garden or eating my plants obviously. This can sometimes be remedied by placing row tunnels, fabric, or even putting a panel near something I don't want my male to pee on. We haven't found it to be a big deal at all though. I use my calmer, older dogs for garden patrol rather than the pups, as they are pretty content to lay under a shade tree and watch out for uninvited visitors!

I never trained them they do it on there own or turn them onto the deer. I have red heelers and blue heelers. They think they own this place and will run off anything else bigger or smaller than they are
