I found the following video on YOUTube: Belgian Draft Horses-horses pulling vs tractor pulling. 16 European Belgians in front of a dynamometer compared to a John Deere, older model, horsepower ??
The horses do not even seem to strain as they pull the device the full distance.

Neat video! It's here if anyone wants to watch it:

That's a 2 cylinder John Deere, gas, and I think the biggest one they made was the model 630, which was rated at 44 hp drawbar. The video says the tractor is a 42 hp. I can't tell exactly what model it is.

Thank you, Charlie, for the information. I think even fewer horses could have beaten that tractor.
By the way, I look forward with great interest to the continuation of your wheat story in the next RH magazine.

that tractor was John Deere's first diesel made from 1949-1954 on the belt developed 44 hp something less to the ground. yes it was a 2 cylinder with a pony motor to start the engine.

Charlie, count me in with Klaus as for one looking to read more about your wheat! Well done.

Thanks, KC, I didn't realize that was a diesel. For sure, with all that black smoke it must be! I had always assumed that their first diesel was a straight 4 or 6.

I'm glad somebody liked the article! Joe has been very supportive and it was a lot of fun to make this contribution. Stay tuned for the exciting conclusion in the next issue, when the story goes behind the iron curtain, and Nazis threaten the seed supply. I'm not kidding, btw!
