Turner Farm, a non-profit farm with an educational mission, is seeking an experienced teamster’s
apprentice to assist with the basic care of our 4 Belgian horses and 2 donkeys. We use our horses for
Turner Farm
some of our farm work as well as wagon rides for summer camps & visitors. Additionally, we attend visitors. Additionally, we attend parades and other public events such as the farmers market. Our donkeys are used for protection of our sheep, however we would like to train one to use in our gardens. We are currently seeking an assistant for the 2014 growing season (April-October) with the possibility of being hired for year- round management of the draft animal program in future years.
The ideal candidate has experience working & caring for draft horses, maintaining horse drawn equipment, and a genuine enthusiasm for teaching others in order to keep the art of farming with horses alive. Experience raising produce and training young equines would be a plus. Our farm is located in the suburbs of Cincinnati, and we have a lot of visitors as we are open to the public, Monday-Saturday,
year round.

Overview
  • Source of power: 4 Belgians and 2 donkeys.
  • Horses are used for: Plow, disc, harrow, plant, cultivate, harvest, haul logs, spread manure, wagon rides, teach driving classes.
  • Experience: I’ve been working with these animals for 3 years. I've spent some time working with a few good mentors. I have a solid foundation of knowledge, but I am always learning new things.
  • Acreage: 200; 8 in garden, 50 in pasture, 10 in hay, 100 in woodlot.
  • Other livestock: Dairy cows, sheep, pigs, layer & broiler chickens, bees
  • Experience you can teach an apprentice: Apprentices will primarily learn about raising vegetables using horse power. There is some light equipment modification & repair involved. We do spend a portion of our time doing wagon rides for camps & visits (including a busy pumpkin patch in the fall), so there is a lot of opportunity to practice driving wagons as well. Additionally, apprentices will have the opportunity to pitch in with all livestock chores, and will be expected to help put up hay. I also manage the cultivation of edible mushrooms & berries. I am in the process of training a young colt to join our working team, and you will get to help with that process. Other learning goals can be discussed and modified to fit your interests.
  • What is expected of apprentice: I would prefer someone that has experience with draft horses, or at least has some experience with horses. You need to have some vegetable farming experience, at least one season. This apprenticeship focuses on the horse part of farming. You need to have a basic understanding of vegetable production. In regards to your personality and work ethic, I expect someone who is willing to be a good student. This means you are respectful, inquisitive, observant and persistent. To me this means that you will respect my knowledge and follow my instructions first, and we can discuss alternate approaches when that is appropriate. I am open to new ideas, farming is full of innovation, but I need to know that you respect my experience and knowledge. I am looking for someone who has a genuine enthusiasm for keeping the art of farming with horsepower alive & relevant. My ideal working partner is willing to put forth their best effort, while having the patience necessary to troubleshoot and refine a process.
