Renew Gold

Hi, Dr. Valentine (happy St. Patrick's Day Eve).
I have been looking at a new feed product called Renew Gold and was wondering if you had any opinion on it. It is pricey - $30 for a 30# bag but they say that you should only feed between 3/4#'s and 1.5#'s a day ... I have an email to them to see how this works if you have a horse that gets 30,000 calories a day between hay, feed and fat supplementation.

I am SO sorry to be so long in responding here. I started a reply and my power went out for a few days and I am still catching up! I checked out this feed and, like so many newer feeds, it looks very good at 15% fat with low starch and sugar. But I also don't look very hard at the manufacturer feeding recommendations as there is so much variation in horse needs and in what other feeds are being fed. If I were to feed this product I'd calculate for the fat content and try to get at least 1/3 to 1/2 pound of fat per day from it. I'd just want to check to make sure that wouldn't provide too much selenium, although that is unlikely as selenium content is regulated and most feed companies are cautious about it.
