How much oil for a pony?
Posted by Dick Hutchinson at 2009-07-19 21:11:52
Hi
I see that you recommended 3 cups of oil for a draft horse. How much oil would you recommend for a 650 lb (weight tape) pony. I started him on oil last fall and his body condition improved, but lately (fly time) he is starting to get ribbey again.
Thanks

The "dose" of oil I like to aim for is 2 cups oil per 1000 lbs of horse per day. So, for your pony I'd aim for about 1 3/4 cups per day. That weight tape may be underestimating his weight so 1 3/4 would compensate for that. If he starts to carry too much weight you can reduce. What breeding is he?

Thanks.

He is just pony. He has a fan on the top of his tail, like, (I think} either the Fell or Dale pony.

Thanks Dick. He much be pretty chunky at that weight! You want to be a bit more careful feeding fat to ponies so that we don't end up with insulin resistance issues (ponies are so often designed to "live on air"). If he doesn't have problems that could be EPSM yand you just want to keep him healthy with a shiny coat ou might want to aim for only 1 cup oil per day. I know this is different than my first response but before I was wondering whether you had a Haflinger, and Haflingers so often do have EPSM muscle problems. Now that I know more I'd rather err on a lower oil intake "dose" unless there are tying up or other muscle issues.
