Fungus in ears
Posted by Steve Mezinger at 2009-06-27 13:08:55
I have a haflinger with a white looking fungus in her ears. It has a slight oder to it and bothers her when you go to touch her ears. There is some puss coming from them also.

The odds are good that these are aural plaques and not fungus. Aural plaques in horses are due to a papillomavirus that makes the skin proliferate and cause white fungus-looking masses in the skin of the inner ears. Most of the time these will eventually settle down and not bother the horse much, if at all. Unfortunately, last I checked there really wasn't an effective therapy for aural plaques in horses. Be sure to also call your veterinarian to check on these.
