hay with preservative
Posted by Butch Myers at 2009-04-06 09:18:25
Has anyone had hay that has been sprayed with a preservative that their horses will not eat ? I bought some very nice 2nd cutting orchard grass but some of it must have been sprayed with a hay preservative because our horses won't even touch it. My hay guy said that he bought it from another farmer and that this fellow has a baler that can sense moisture content and will spray a bale if it needs it .Does anyone know if there is a way around this , something to neutralize the preservative ? I hate to throw it away , as it looks and feels great . Thank you .

I've had alfalfa hay sprayed with mold retardent, and had no problems with it. This subject comes up periodically on some veterinary boards and there has been no health issues that I know of.

The fact that your horses won't eat it, though, is a major concern since horses may not need grain but they definitely need forage!

Try finding a hay your horses like and then mixing some of this in. My horses are so spoiled with Oregon alfalfa hay that when we buy valley grass hay, which really looks, feels, and smells, great, they just aren't interested.
