Follow up question about Cushing's horse
Posted by Tina at 2009-02-13 10:06:10
Hi Dr. Beth--the little old horse that was diagnosed with Cushing's in the fall seems to be doing much better, but still has not gained much weight. (He has regained some muscle tone, though. He's much better than he was.) Personally, I am not surprised because he just isn't an enthusiastic eater, so he doesn't eat a lot of hay or feed, really, and there's no grass. His energy and attitude are hugely improved. But he is still on the thin side. So a woman who gives some beginner lessons on him bought Source Focus WT for him. Are there any reasons to be concerned about this supplement with his Cushing's treatment? And do these supplements for weight gain even work? Seems to me he just needs more calories (and maybe a dental checkup!) but nobody seems to want to go the extra mile and give him alfalfa mashes with a bit of oil like the vet recommended, it's easier to throw money and a scoop of powder at the problem.

Thanks for the update on this guy Tina. I don't see where this supplement is going to do much for weight gain - there really isn't much in the way of high density calories. It won't hurt, but I'm with you and the veterinarian - some added oil and soaked alfalfa sound really good. I can't remember - is he on Pergolide to try to control his Cushing's Disease? Sometimes Cushing's horses just don't want to eat enough of anything to really regain muscle, but having better energy and attitude is a big plus.

Yes, he is on pergolide, and he is not an enthusiastic eater, so like you say, he just will not eat enough regular food to really put on weight. He often leaves a little food in his bowl. I think I'll make an effort to give him "lunch" of alfalfa and oil every day that I can and see if that helps!

Tina, that sounds like a great plan to me.
