EPSM horse getting picky
Posted by Debbie at 2008-10-18 22:54:37
Hi, my draft cross is getting very picky about his EPSM diet-he seems to like the oil ok but I mix it with alfala pellets and a small amount of blue seal demand-I have read about blue seal vintage performanceLS in a prior post and Dr. Valentine says it is an ok base mix.How much changing can I do with the base feed with keeping the 2 cups oil to keep him interested in his feed.I tried one of the high fat mixes and he did not like it.I tried an all alfala meal with the oil and he only picked at it. Mac has been on the diet now for a month and a half and we have seen his hip muscles increase. So I know this oil mix is working. I would really like to vary the base feed a little but I am concerned about upsetting the great results I have seen so far.I have really liked working with blue seal products, I I would like to stay with their products. Also what about Sunshine plus-it is a complete supplement- or do I not need any addition supplements beside the seliumn that I feed? Thanks

Debbie, have you tried adding some of the Blue Seal Hay Stretcher pellets? If he likes this it is very much like adding oil to hay. Any feed designed to be low in starch and sugar is good, though, and if it takes a little bit of something "sweet" to get him to keep eating that is not a problem. It is not at all unusual for horses to be a bit erratic about eating right early on in diet change, though, so sometimes you just need to "tough it out" and let the horse get used to eating what is a healthy diet. If you make any changes be sure to make them very gradually. As to supplements beyond vitamin E, selenium (in deficient parts of the country), and added fat, if your hay is good quality you really shouldn't need anything else. But if you are worried adding a daily "broad spectrum" vitamin/mineral mix would be fine. Check with your veterinarian though to make sure that what you feed doesn't risk feeding too much selenium (which would be very hard to do in the Northeast or the Pacific Northwest, but worth making sure).
