Magnesium doses / Renal problems / Shivers

Hello Dr Valentine,
You help me with my 7 year old percheron in the past, he has been on 4 cups of oil for years and has done fine but the shivers are progressing to the point we can not trim his back feet. The muscle spasms is what bothers him the most it just grabs him and pulls him backwards. I have him on a low strach/sugar diet, oil and Vit e & Sel. and wanted to see about putting him on Magnesium.
He had severe Renal faliure when he was about 4 months old and I battled skin conditions with him for about 4 years, after 4 years of homeapthy the skin has cleared up. He also had ulcers when he was younger along with septic in the joints which they flushed. Will the Magnesium upset his Kidneys or old Ulcers?
How much magnesium to feed a 1900lb horse?
What kind of magnesium and where to purchase?
Thank you so much,
Donna & Major

I wanted to check on some sources and then time got away from me, so I really apologize for the delay here. 20 mg of magnesium per 1000 lbs of horse per day, which I believe is the level in Quiessence, seems to be useful to some horses. Being a draft you would want to feed at least 30 mg per day though. I do not know of any adverse effects of added magnesium on kidneys or ulcers, so this could certainly be worth a try. I hope it helps!
