worming weanlings
Posted by Butch Myers at 2008-09-26 07:12:15
Dr. Beth , we picked up two weanling colts from Orndorffs back in August , one was born Feb.21st the other March 31st. My question , can we use the same deworming medicine that we use for our older horses , I understand that we'll adjust for the weight , I'm just not sure if we should use something else .What are your thoughts about "daily dewormers" , we don't use them , but should we ? Thankyou .

Hi Butch. I'd recommend alternating ivermectin and the pyrantel pamoate (Strongid-type) dewormers on these yearlings. I'd start with the Strongid-type to be sure you kill the ascarid roundworms that are not always controlled by ivermectin. I would avoid the moxidectin and the ivermectin with tapeworm medication at least until they are 2 years old or more. Estimate their weight as best you can and adjust for it. Fortunately, these dewormers have been safety tested for higher doses than recommended and so it is fine if you are off on their weight a bit. As to the daily dewormers, in some circumstances with some horses these have been the ideal approach. For other horses they are not necessary and regular deworming programs work best. As always, work with your veterinarian to develop the best deworming program for your horses, as he or she is best able to judge your operation and the parasite problems in your area.
