Shivers and parking out
Posted by Kim at 2008-08-21 13:28:59
My shivers horse just began Tuesday to "park out" in front every so often. He has always had the classic symptoms involving his hind end, but has not shown this before.
Is this part of Shivers?
Can exercise make this happen?
I am soooo frustrated.
Went on trail ride Tuesday down a hill that he never had problems with before now seems to hurt going down.
What now?
Neg. for epsm, but textbook shivers.

I'd have your veterinarian come to check that nothing is going on in the foreleg joints, tendons, etc. that might be causing this. But, shivers can progress to cause cramping in foreleg muscles as well as hind legs. This is especially true in the drafts. Unaccustomed exercise could cause a brief bout of cramping but, in the long run, is still very good for the horse's muscles. You've been doing all the right things for Monte and all I can say is to keep doing them. Unfortunately, Monte is proving to be one of the shivers horses that doesn't respond well to diet and exercise. I can't remember if I mentioned adding a magnesium supplement to his diet - sometimes this helps stubborn EPSM cases and it definitely doesn't hurt. Quiessence is one product for horses that contains magnesium. Can't hurt to try if you haven't already.
