draft rescue closing it's doors
Posted by Lori at 2008-07-15 13:35:51
I am hoping this is an appropriate forum to share this news, as it is draft related, and it is through this rescue that I first heard of Dr. Valentine, Rural Heritage and the draft diet.

A rescue in South Dakota, Lazy Horse Rescue that focuses on rescuing drafts, is being forced by financial tough times to close it's doors. The rescue is run by a woman named Gabi, who is an extraordinary person. For the past four or five years she has single-handedly run this rescue; finding, purchasing and transporting all the horses, performing all the labor that horses involve (from feeding to cleaning to maintaining infrastructure, meeting with vets and farriers, staying up with sick and neglected horses), all while working a full-time job and paying for everything out of her own pocket (she does not have non-profit status). I adopted a beautiful Shire mare from her two years ago who is one of the loves of my life, and thanks to Gabi, she now has a safe and forever home. Gabi was wonderful to work with on this adoption, and she had Wendy's safety and future foremost in mind during the process (she had turned down more than a dozen potential adopters before she chose me).

I just wanted to mention this here because this is a site full of folks who love and respect horses, especially drafts, and Gabi now has to find great permanent homes for the remaining horses in her care. Maybe if everyone who reads this forum can help spread the word to other caring, responsible horse owners and lovers that they know, Gabi will be able to find great homes for the rest of these wonderful horses. You can read Gabi's story and visit the horses at www.lazyhorserescue.org. Maybe together, we can all help Gabi and the horses out in their time of need.
