mustard oil for horses

Do you know anything about using mustard oil in place of vegetable or soybean oil? This mustard is pressed from ordinary everyday mustard seed. Our local mill has gone way up on the price of the soyoil, but has a surplus of mustard oil. thanking you in advance. Milton

Never heard of mustard oil, but boy, I hear ya about the veg oil--prices are thru the roof. Last time I went to Sam's Club, the price of the 35 lb. jug had gone up another $3 from the a month before when I bought it, to almost $22.00. It was around $12 when I started buying it a few years ago, it was $15 last summer. Gotta wonder how far up it will go. And why--is it because so much is being used for biodiesel? I find that hard to believe.

Wow, this is a new one! Let me check with my nutritionist friends and get back to you about this.

Dr. Van Saun, a nutritionist friend, had no information to offer on mustard oil. Doing a quick search I found a statement that "Due to its high content of erucic acid, which is considered noxious, mustard oil is not considered suitable for human consumption." This is disputed by people in areas such as India where mustard oil is used. But, I think I'd rather err on the safe side and say that mustard oil in high amounts might not be the best thing for our horses.
