Belgian With Severe Feet

Hi I recently took in a belgian who has major foot issues and my farrier has trimmed this horse before and is at a loss. She has an abscessed hoof and severe cracking. I am treating the abscess with penicillin what else can I do to help clear this up?

Beth ;
You really need to soak her feet with something like "Clean Trax" , or "White Lightning" , I like the Clean Trax, this company also has a great soaking boot that's not too expensive and very easy to use . You can get this through Centaur Forge , look them up on the net. Just follow the directions , 1 bottle will soak 2 hooves , I'd do all four , it'll take time but worth it , 45 minutes per hoof. Good luck .

Beth,
You may want to look at the info at www.hoofrehab.com also. Pete Ramey has tons of info on problem hooves---my daughter's Belgian also has troublesome feet; we searched and found a "Barefoot" trimmer that has helped ALOT. You can also ask the "virtual farrier" here on the porch.
The problem with our Belgian is many of the "tried and true" methods of fixing the problem don't work.
It's frustrating.
Good luck!
