Hitting Back Ankles
Posted by John at 2008-09-23 04:14:24
We have a team of Percheron mares. One of them is hitting her back ankles, and now both have a sore on them, and I am not using her, I am doctoring her ankles. She was just shod, I thought her being long was the problem, but she is still clipping her self. Do I need to change the angle of her foot? She seems to be a little cow hocked. Any suggestions I would be grateful.
Thanks John

John;
Sounds like the breakover on the front hooves is to far forward , have your farrier check this and bring that back before changing anything else. If the front foot is staying on the ground a little longer then it needs to this allows the rears to come up and clip the fronts , I see alot of walking horses that have this problem too , but as soon as the breakover is corrected it fixes everything . Good luck .
