Belgian severe cracked hooves
Posted by Dawn at 2008-08-30 21:59:35
HI! I don't know much about draft hooves but looked to buy one today and the hind legs has severe cracks along the back of the hooves that curled up. The horse was in no pain and the owner said that draft horses hooves crack which I knew but this seemed bad. I was wondering if this cracking and curling up was a normal thing. Or have I avoided some hefty future farrier bills and maybe even a lame horse? Also, is there a good web sight for draft hoof care and drafts in general?

Thanks for your replys!

From your description, there could be a couple of things going on. The area where the frog and periople meet at the heel region will often have some excess material that can look bad, but is harmless. This will be trimmed off by the farrier when they trim the feet. You could also have a long hoof that is peeling up from a need of trimming. As long as you don't have lameness, then you are probably okay, but I would get a farrier out there soon to trim the feet.
