Shoeing a sore horse

I have a eight year old gelding with ringbone, with our vet's advice he is shod with bar shoes and rolled toes. He is still quite sore and refuses to stand on three legs for any time, which is causing trouble when the farrier resets him. Even medicated and in stocks, its quite a battle. And usually by five weeks he needs to be reset.
I am wondering if he would be better off with horse boots rather then metal shoes. One brand "Boa" boots state they help the concussion issues. These boots would allow for quicker trims times. I am finding it hard to keep him properly shod, and I think soon my farrier will refuse to do him. Any advice?
