Pony Founder from Illness

I had a 11h shetland pony get salmonellae. He lost a bunch of weight but managed to beat the bug. The same day that he started to get better he started to be tender on his feet. He was at the vet clinic and the farrier that the vet used trimmed him and padded him up to help. The farrier trimmed off of the heels and then trimmed to toe to break over quicker. I am having a hard time understanding how this helped the pony. He is now home and seems to be fine. A little stiff, but not too bad. I want to keep this little guy trimmed to avoid future problems. I am careful with the feed to try and avoid founder. Two kinds of ponies--those that have foundered and those that have yet too. Is there something I am missing? Thanks in advance, KM
