Horse lands on toe
Posted by Dan at 2007-04-08 23:12:11
Have a gelding that lands on his toe or flat footed instead of heels. Most apparent at a walk. Does not seem as bad at a trot. He carries a 53 degree toe angle and slightly lower heel angle (51-52). Presently using eventer shoes on him to help him breakover quicker. Any advice will be appreciated.

Most horses land heel first, but only slightly, and not every horse will do that. For some horses, landing toe first is a sign of heel soreness. This will give them a stilted and unusual gait. However, if it is only slightly toe first, and there is not any lameness, I would not be too concerned.
