Chronic soreness in heels
Posted by Dianna at 2006-12-28 13:17:35
I have an older gelding (who we have discussed many times - he blew a seroma through the bottom of his hoof and is still slighlty off). However, it really seems like his heels bother him (more than anything).

Any suggestions? I believe that the farrier has balanced him nicely and he is in pads, but perhaps you might have an "idea" of something we can look at which might need changed or perhaps a specific kind of pad/shoe combination??

Heel soreness can be caused by a whole slew of things. I would get a diagnosis of the problem that is causing the heel soreness so that I could shoe accordingly. Generally stated, if you are dealing with a heel sore horse, you can often help with increasing the angle, a bar shoe, and equipak. However, if you have an open abscess, don't cover it with acrylic or polyurethane.

No open abscess. So far there is no real explanation why his heels are sore - despite thousands of dollars in vet work.

Perhaps the bar shoe and change in angle.
