Shoeing after laminitis
Posted by Margaret at 2006-08-17 10:16:27
My Icelandic had a 4 hoof episode of laminitis this past weekend. The vet wanted the farrier to put styrofoam wedges under the heels on all 4 feet as a temporary measure & then to shoe with wedges. (Right now he has frog support shoes/pads in front & nothing in back.)
My farrier is on vacation, so I got the man he trained with to come out. This man's been a farrier for 40+ years. He put a small styrofoam pad on each front heel & told me the horse didn't really need wedges.
What do I do now? Listen to the vet or the farrier?

You are in a tough spot, one which several of my customers have been in in the past when I did not agree with their vet. You have to decide who to put your trust in, and then follow through with that. I cannot give you direct advice, but I will tell you that I will not do anything to a horse that I do not believe in 100%, regardless of what the vet wants. That makes people who hire me make a decision that you are facing. If the farrier feels strongly against what the vet is wanting, then he should not perform the procedure. By the way, I am in the camp that does not believe in wedging most laminitic horses. There are a few select ones that I can see wedging, but not the majority. My best advice is to pray about it, and then your decision will be the right one.
