Clyde has triangle shaped hoofs
Posted by Tracy at 2006-08-06 00:30:16
What can be done to fix a 13-year-old Clyde mare that has triangle hoofs? They are in really bad shape. Do you shoe or keep trimming until you get them in to somewhat normal hoof shape? We just bought this mare in hopes to correct her hoof problem, as she is a wonderful horse. Please help!

You need an expert farrier to shape the hooves correctly by trimming for the amount of time it takes to get the proper front and hind shape growing. You can also use a supplement like Farriers Formula to get the hooves growing faster and stronger.

Is there any way to shoe a horse like this? Also, how long do you think it will take to get her hooves back into shape, a year? I've had horses all my life, but this is my first draft and I've never had any hoof problems like this before.

Thanks!

In my experience, if you have enough skill and creativity, you can get a shoe on any foot. Many major hoof problems will take a year to work out due to the rate of growth, but it will also depend on the competence of your farrier. I would need to see a picture to help much more.
