Forging draft shoes
Posted by jim at 2006-05-19 01:26:00
I have recently been asked to shoe a couple of draft horses with handmade shoes. The problem is that I always use mfg shoes just to save time. I have made plenty of handmade shoes for saddle horses and always measure the hoof to determine the amount of bar stock needed. Since I have never made a shoe this big before, how much do you add to the length bar stock once you have measured from the heels to the opposing toe and added them together?

I would suggest that you measure from heel to heel around the circumference of the foot, and subtract 2 3/4 inches from that measurement if you are using 1/2" x 1", or 3 inches if you are using 1/2" x 1 1/4". You might make a couple of shoes ahead of time to see if your measurements will match mine.
