What is outcrossing?

The opposite of line breeding. Breeding outside breed lines.

Mating animals of non-related families of the same breed.

If you use far enough unrelated animals it is almost like cross breeding within the breed. A really good breeder whom I admire once told me the great programs use linebreeding and then outcross. Use the lines to establish uniformity and consistency then find the closest to kind outcross. The resulting offspring should be true to type with the vigor from the outcross.
