Training and Showing Books
Posted by David at 2015-08-14 08:54:10
Can anyone tell me where to purchase current books on showing, clipping, and training draft horses for shows? I looked in the RH bookstore but everything I saw was published 15-20 years ago.

Thanks,

Fifteen to 20 years ago? I am sure that's because it is still valid and good advice. As far as horses are concerned, old wisdom is still good wisdom.

David.......have you contacted the show organization for a rule book? Years ago I used to show hunter, equitaion, etc. The governing body over the shows was the AHSA (American Horsehows Association)it now has a different name.

Whatever show organization, their rule book should give guidelines for specific mane and tail styles.

As far as the books in the RH store, I would think any information gleaned from them would still hold true for today. Especially the training information. Its tried and true!

Best thing I found was a video from Cathy zahm. I don't recall the exact name but it had to do with grooming for show or sale.

Go to some shows and watch what they are doing, look at styles. If you can find some two or three day shows you can see how they prepare.

Their is very little that is new in the show horse world. Much of the changes we have seen in the different breed circles are nothing more than fads that come and go. A good horse is still a good horse. In the draft horse business, big horses have always been around but good movement has been refined some. As far as prepping for shows,i.e. grooming, clipping and decorating, not much has changed. As Allen mentioned, go to a show and ask questions. There are plenty of people willing to share knowledge.
