Thank you. Will be trying it next spring, Lord willing.

Paul: Take photos, make notes and put together a story for the magazine. Would make a good article showing your actual experiences.

This is crazy this post popped up i have been reading on tree grafting and i plan on trying a few this year in late winter before the spring wake up. i am curious as when do you collect the scion? now for next year or when? what keeps it alive?

You collect during the winter when the trees are dormant. I wanted some scions from a very good apple tree that had been bird sown. An acquaintance is an expert who had been grafting for a nursery. He had me cut pencil-thick 12" minimum scions off my tree during the winter dormancy. In very early spring, he grafted onto a dwarf stock root. Take great care for compatibility in choosing the root stock.
