Barn Door Track - Rectangular or Round?
Posted by Barb Lee at 2015-07-24 17:14:58
We have a sliding shop door on rectangular track that has gone through several sets of rollers over the years. Is round track better/more durable?

Thanks!

Never had rectangular track. The round ones on my old barn have been there for at least 60 years!

If it's a heavy door (rough cut lumber) use the round track and metal wheels. A person might split the door into two pieces(latch together when closed) as it will be heavy and be hard to push to open or close if it is one door.

Thank you all very much for the responses. The door SEEMS awfully heavy as the rollers are useless more often than not. It is about 12 ft long and 8 ft tall, metal end pieces, 2x6 horizontals and sheathed in steel siding. The problem is a mystery...we don't have the problem with other sliding doors on the place! I have heard that round track was superior, and now you folks have confirmed for me. The idea of splitting the door in two pieces would never have occurred to me, will mention it to hubby. Thank you all for your help. Hopefully one of the farm supply stores nearby has the round track.

I have both round and rectangular and have had problems with both light and heavy doors. the best track that I have is a 1 1/4 pipe with round pulleys for rollers all they have needed is a little grease once it a while to keep the rollers turning & someone to build a new door every time a horse run's through the door or 35 years.

The problem with the rectangular track is the shape. It's a natural nesting place for Mud Daubers to build a mud storage area for it's larva and a handful of spiders. The round track is open on the bottom and cleans it's self every time you move the door. I have mostly the rectangular track and squirt oil up into the grove then move the door back and forth several times and the oil will lube the rollers and the oil will also deter the nest building. Blowing the dirt out before adding the oil will make the oiling more successful.

Good luck,
Bill

I have not seen round track for sale around here for many years. I will say that I have seen a fair amount of it on really old barns and sheds in this area. So it must work !

KC Fox ,What tool did you use to cut the slit in that pipe for the track. The round rollers that you speak of are the round ones for the round track?

these pulleys are for rope about 4 inches in diameter they set on the outside of the pipe. the door is 2x10 plank there is 3 supports for the pipe, the door is 6' wide 8' tall on the horse barn so it gets alot of use.

KC Fox Ima still not getting the picture in my mind of what your speaking of(picture)?

I am not KC Fox, but what he is talking about is using a pulley on top of the pipe. In top to bottom the configuration is Pulley (installed to lift the door) the Pipe and then the Door. My guess is that the pulleys are installed on the pipe before you mount the pipe to the building, or KC has found pulleys with a J yoke. The J would be installed with the long side down to the door.
