mower questions
Posted by kelly in tx at 2015-07-01 18:39:44
If I remember, I & J is the maker of the double sickle mower, correct? Are there others?
Questions: 1)what bar lengths are available, and what length can a reasonable draft team pull in heavy (coastal bermuda) grass cutting?
2) Are the "knives" able to be sharpened? Are they long lasting? Are they expensive to replace?
3) They are supposed to be good about NOT clogging. Here I'm running into fire ant mounds making me cuss. Is this a far superior mower? thanks for advice. kelly in tx

We have been using the I&J double action trailer mower at 9ft length since it came out. We pull it with HD Ground Drive Cart. We have diagnosed most of the good and the bad from these type mowers. 7ft is the length for a team in good shape with a steady athletic stride. Consistent pull and stride is paramount to success with this outfit.

They're great mowers. I've been using them for a while now. Cut between 240 and 320 acres a year with them. They excell in heavy grass hay. Not hard to sharpen.
I have a 9' and a 7' model each. Mine are motorized. I'm all for the ground drive deal but I've got too much ground to cover.

I am a little bit late on here but have been gone to HPD for a week. Here in SC all I cut for hay is coastal Bermuda, and we have plenty of fire ant mounds to work through also. I use the IHC #9 mowers and have no trouble. If you will try the B+ sections (also known as Super 7, or German made 333 1/2) and the #218DH haybine guards I think you will see that they cut through anything. I have mowers with 5' and 6' bars, horses weigh about 1800 each, do OK even when the temps get in the 90's. I prefer the regular gear mowers but either type will work if it is set up right. I also cut clover and oats and millet and anything else that I want to. I sell the mowers for $1500 to $1650, so you can buy several of them for what one of the new ones costs. I know the repairs cost quite a bit less as they wear, and they are pretty easy to work on.
